Do you take probiotics on a regular basis? What is your choice of probiotics? Capsules, bulk powders, yogurt, or homemade probiotic drinks or food?
I make water kefir at home, a non-dairy probiotic drink. I can’t tell you how much our family benefits from drinking it every day. Water kefir contains far more strains and much higher potency than yogurt or buttermilk. It costs almost nothing and is the easiest probiotic drink, that you can make just over your kitchen counter. Is that an ideal economical vegan probiotic drink!
Water kefir has a mild tangy taste and is fizzy when it is bottled tightly. Starting with a spoonful of water kefir grains and sugar water, a glass of vegan friendly water kefir can be ready at room temperature in 24 hours. There is no need for any fancy equipment (such as an incubator) or following any critical steps in preparation (such as sterilizing utensils). All you need is a glass jar, a fine-mesh strainer, and a bowl (for collecting water kefir). How simple is that!
At this point, if I have convinced you to try to grow your own water kefir at home, you can go to my water kefir post to find out more details, such as where you can buy kefir grains, how to start your first batch, and so on.
You can never drink too much water kefir. Because of its mild taste, it is so versatile that you can add numerous flavors to it. In this recipe, I’m sharing with you the ginger blueberry water kefir, a thrifty homemade probiotic drink rich in antioxidants, minerals, and gut friendly bacteria and yeast.
Use a blender to puree the fresh blueberries and minced ginger roots with some lemon juice. Add the puree to your water kefir and stir. A glass of deep red summer punch is ready in less than 5 minutes. Not only does the addition of ginger enhance the tangy taste of the drink, but it also gives it a touch of spiciness. The addition of some lemon juice will give it a little extra zing.
Whenever my friends ask me what is the best way to boost ones gut health, I recommend water kefir. Compared to store-bought juice, homemade fruit water kefir punch is low in sugar and full of extra healthy ingredients. You really can’t go wrong with it!
