A New Recipe Adventure

Soft Vegan Pretzels one of my favorite snack, One rainy afternoon, I found myself craving something warm and comforting. I wanted to bake, but I wasn’t sure what. As I flipped through my recipe book, my eyes landed on a recipe for soft vegan pretzels. My heart skipped a beat! I had never made pretzels before, but they sounded so fun to create. I gathered my ingredients, feeling excited about this new adventure in my kitchen.

Mixing the Dough

I started by mixing the sugar and yeast in a big bowl, pouring in the warm water. The smell of the yeast made me feel hopeful. After a few minutes, the mixture bubbled up like magic! I added the flour and melted vegan butter, stirring until I had a sticky dough. Kneading it on the counter was a workout, but I loved how the dough changed from sticky to smooth. I could already imagine the warm pretzels in my hands.

Shaping and Bathing

After the dough rose to double its size, it was time to shape the pretzels. I divided the dough into eight pieces and rolled each one into a long rope. Shaping them into pretzel twists was like a dance. I couldn’t help but smile as I dipped each pretzel into the baking soda bath. It felt special, knowing this step gave them their unique taste. The pretzels were ready to bake, and I could hardly wait to see how they turned out.

The Perfect Snack

When the pretzels came out of the oven, they were golden brown and smelled incredible. I sprinkled them with coarse salt and let them cool for a bit. The first bite was heavenly! The soft, chewy inside paired perfectly with a bit of mustard for dipping. I felt proud to share these delicious vegan pretzels with my family. Each pretzel was a warm hug, reminding me that cooking can create happiness in our lives, even on rainy days.

Chef’s Notes-Soft Vegan Pretzels

  • Always ensure your yeast is fresh and properly activated. If using instant yeast, it should froth and bubble when mixed with warm water. If it doesn’t, your yeast might be expired, and you should start over.
  • Knead the dough until it’s smooth and elastic. This helps develop gluten, which gives the pretzels their chewy texture. If the dough feels sticky, dust with a little more flour as needed.
  • For optimal dough rising, find a warm spot in your kitchen. A turned-off oven with the light on is a perfect place.
  • The baking soda bath is essential for achieving that classic pretzel flavor and color. Make sure the water is at a gentle simmer when adding the baking soda. Be cautious as it can bubble up.
  • Get creative with toppings! Before baking, try adding sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning for added flavor and texture.
  • These pretzels are delicious on their own, but they pair excellently with various dips like vegan cheese, mustard, or even a spicy salsa.
  • If making ahead, allow pretzels to cool completely, then freeze in an airtight container. To reheat, bake from frozen at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes or until warmed through.

You can use active dry yeast instead. Just remember to proof it first by dissolving it in warm water with a little sugar before adding it to the dough.

How do I store leftover pretzels?

Store leftover pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe bag or container.

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the dough, let it rise, and then shape the pretzels. Cover them tightly and refrigerate overnight. Allow them to come to room temperature before dipping them in the baking soda bath.
