Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes is one of my favorite recipes. Whenever I crave something sweet and savory, I turn to this delightful dish. The combination of a soft and sweet interior with a crispy outer layer is simply irresistible. With just a few ingredients, Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes transforms ordinary sweet potatoes into a mouthwatering side dish or main course that everyone loves.

A Simple Preparation

To make Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes, I start by picking out four medium-sized sweet potatoes that are about the same size. It’s essential to wash them well and pierce them with a fork so they can cook evenly. I mix olive oil, sea salt, and garlic seasoning in a bowl, creating a tasty coating for the potatoes. After brushing this mixture over the sweet potatoes, I place them in the air fryer basket. As they cook at 390°F, the sweet aroma fills my kitchen, and I can hardly wait for the delicious outcome!

The Exciting Finish

After about 40 minutes, I check if they’re tender by inserting a knife. If they need more time, I keep air frying them in 5-minute intervals until they are perfectly cooked and the skins are beautifully crispy. Once they’re done, I let them cool before slicing them open. This is the fun part! I scoop out the soft flesh and mix it with vegan butter, salt, and pepper, making it creamy and flavorful. Then, I stuff the mixture back into the crispy skins, adding toppings like vegan cheese or baked beans for extra flavor.

Ready to Serve

The final step in making Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes is serving them warm, garnished with a dollop of vegan sour cream and fresh herbs. Every bite offers a wonderful contrast of textures, from the crispy skin to the fluffy filling. These sweet potatoes are not just a side dish; they are a star on any table! I love sharing this recipe with family and friends because it’s easy to make and full of flavor. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to enjoy healthy eating while satisfying my cravings.

Chef’s Notes- Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes

  • Selecting Sweet Potatoes: Look for medium-sized sweet potatoes that are smooth and firm with no soft spots. The skin should be intact without blemishes for the best flavor and texture.
  • Pat Dry for Crispiness: Make sure to thoroughly wash and pat dry the sweet potatoes before coating them with oil. Moisture on the skin can prevent crispiness.
  • Use of Fork: Piercing the sweet potatoes with a fork not only allows steam to escape but also helps the skin become crispier during cooking.
  • Seasoning Variations: Feel free to adjust the seasoning according to your taste. Adding spices like paprika, cumin, or chili powder can give a delightful twist to the flavor profile.
  • Check Doneness: If you’re unsure whether the potatoes are done, you can test multiple potatoes by inserting a knife into the center. It should slide in easily.
  • Topping Ideas: Get creative with toppings! Consider adding a dollop of vegan sour cream, nutritional yeast, or even fresh avocado slices for a creamy contrast to the crispy potatoes.
  • Reheating: When reheating leftovers, using the air fryer will help restore the crispiness of the skin, unlike a microwave which can make them soggy.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium-sized orange sweet potatoes

  • 4 tsp olive oil or a preferred substitute

  • 2/3 tsp sea salt

  • 1/3 tsp garlic seasoning

  • 1 1/3 tbsp vegan butter or olive oil

  • 1 1/3 tbsp finely chopped chives or parsley

  • sea salt a pinch

  • Alternative Ingredients
  • Olive oil → avocado oil or coconut oil

  • Sea salt → kosher salt or Himalayan salt

  • Garlic seasoning → fresh minced garlic

  • Vegan butter → regular butter or coconut oil

  • Chives → green onions or additional parsley

Directions

  • Prepare Sweet Potatoes – Select four medium orange sweet potatoes, ensuring they are similar in size for even cooking. Thoroughly wash them under cold water and pat dry with a kitchen towel. Pierce each potato several times with a fork to allow steam to escape during the air frying process (Approx. 5 minutes). In a small mixing bowl, combine four teaspoons of olive oil, two-thirds teaspoon of sea salt, and one-third teaspoon of garlic seasoning. Stir well to create a flavorful coating for the sweet potatoes (Approx. 3 minutes).Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes_ post 1
  • Coat Potatoes – Using a pastry brush or your hands, apply the olive oil mixture evenly over the entire surface of each sweet potato. This step ensures the skins become crispy and golden during cooking (Approx. 5 minutes). Place the coated sweet potatoes into the air fryer basket, making sure they do not touch each other. Set the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) and cook for 40 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time, use tongs to flip each potato, promoting even cooking on all sides (Approx. 45 minutes).
  • Check Doneness – After 40 minutes, insert a knife into the center of a sweet potato to check for softness. If the potato is not tender, continue air frying in additional 5-minute increments, checking after each interval until fully cooked and the skins are crispy and golden brown (Approx. additional 5-10 minutes as needed). Carefully remove the baked sweet potatoes from the air fryer using tongs or oven mitts. Transfer them to a chopping board and let them cool for about 10 minutes before handling or stuffing (Approx. 10 minutes).Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes_ post 3
  • Prepare Filling – Slice each sweet potato down the center lengthwise. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh from each potato, then mash it with a fork or potato masher. Combine the mashed sweet potato with olive oil or vegan butter, salt, and pepper to taste (Approx. 5 minutes). Spoon the mashed sweet potato mixture back into the hollowed-out potato skins. Add your preferred toppings, such as vegan cheese or baked beans. Return the stuffed sweet potatoes to the air fryer and cook at 350°F (180°C) until the filling is heated through and the skins are ultra crispy (Approx. 10 minutes).
  • Serve and Garnish – Serve the baked sweet potatoes with a dollop of vegan sour cream and sprinkle with fresh herbs for added flavor and presentation (Approx. 2 minutes).Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes_ post 5
